Since our first visit to Jill Matthews' studio
in 2014, the Kennebunk artist has relocated to a new home with her young family and headed in new directions with her paintings. "I'm settling not only physically into my surroundings, but into the work that I create. I have settled into a style that is my own...something that I have worked towards for some time." This past month we had the opportunity to catch up with Jill as she prepares new work for our summer Artist Series. Though plans for her new studio space are still evolving, the hope is for a barn style studio in the woods using reclaimed wood and lots of natural light. We visited her current studio space and one of her favorite outdoor spots to sketch and gather inspiration.
Known and loved for her peaceful, natural depictions of marshes and pastures, Jill's newest work gracefully captures the spirit of the Maine waters. "I am always looking for new inspiration which is not difficult in this beautiful state. I wanted to try a new subject matter that would challenge me and the lobster boats forced me to work in a much more controlled manner, while still allowing the pieces to give way to that uninhibited feeling so many of my marshes portray." Jill's lobster boat series, as well as some of her other new pieces, will be showcased in our store this upcoming First Friday. Just as we love sharing her work with all of you, Jill also finds offering her art to others deeply gratifying. "Absolutely the best thing about what I do is connecting people with a piece of art that speaks to them. I love seeing the happiness that something I created can bring someone."
