telling room
a season for building houses

The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing center in Portland dedicated to the idea that children and young adults are natural storytellers. They believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, they seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for their students. It helps us learn what today's youth value in objects, people, places and events. Proceeds from the sale of this book help support the Telling Room's free writing programs for children in Maine. These thirty pieces of poetry and prose open a window onto today’s immigrant and refugee experience and explore what it is to belong and to lose, to experience danger and safety, to remember and forget, and to build home after home. Written in Maine.
